Rocky Balboa

To quote Dr. Frankenstein…”It’s Alive. It’s Alive. It’s Alive.” I’m back after an extended absence. If you read my last post, you know I face a few health difficulties recently.
Not too serious, but pretty painful.
But this too has passed.

Anyway, anyone see any good movies this weekend? I finally got to see Rocky Balboa. I’m a huge fan of the first three Rocky movies. I prefer not to acknowledge IV and V exist.

If you are a fan of the Rocky series, you’ll like this one. Surprisingly it is very good. Like many people, I hated the way Rocky was left in the last movie. He’s in a better, but not perfect place at the start of this movie. He is the owner of a small restaurant that you can only believe Adrian opened.
Unfortunately she’s passed away by the time this film opens and his son is distant.
But after a computer says he could have beaten the current heavyweight champ, promoters jump at the chance to stage an exhibition with the 50-something former champ.
This movie is about more than a fight. Stallone, who wrote and directed, has a lot to say about life and aging. He is fighting time more than another boxer. Nothing too deep, but touching all the same. Even Paulie has mellowed with age.
Knowing I was going to see this tonight, I watched the first two films again. It helped put this one in perspective. If you haven’t at least seen the first one, don’t bother with this one. You will not get it.

Unfortunately despite largely positive reviews, Rocky Balboa did not burn up the box office. I believe that is because Rocky belongs to another generation. Most young people have not seen the original. I’d like to see this one grabs a huge audience on DVD. It’s worth seeing.

I know what you mean. I didn't even make it all the way through the first one. I couldn't manage to care what happened to any of the characters.

There aren't any spoilers in there. All that happens in the first five minutes.
